Havana Night will be an exciting and fun evening of Cuban music, Cuban food and Cuban drinks; the Cuban music will be provided by the trio of Caridad Cruz (vocals/bongos), César Ricardo (vocals/guitar/bass) and Israel Martinez (guitar/vocals) and the Cuban food will be prepared by Oslaide Guerra of the Havana Cafe & Catering at 1200 Bank Street. There will also be dance instruction for those interested!

Caridad Cruz has performed at the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, Ottawa Bluesfest, NAC's Fourth Stage, Casino du Lac Leamy Festival of Sound and Light, and Canada Day celebrations at Major's Hill Park. "Havana native Caridad Cruz packs a powerful punch," pronounced the Ottawa Citizen in 2007. "She's an entertainer, a crowd pleaser. With her powerful voice and no-holds-barred personality, she knows how to get people up dancing and singing." Toronto's Now Magazine review of her appearance at Harbourfront in 2004 enthused that "...fire-spirited opener Caridad Cruz erupted into life. Stashed in the Latin artist’s arsenal was... a voice that could easily be confused with that of her namesake, elder Cuban music icon Celia Cruz."

Lowdown on the Lansdowne Legal Challenge: November 28th

A great success! A capacity crowd filled the Mayfair Theatre to learn more on the Lansdowne Legal Challenge. A bit of music, an amusing review of the city's actions so far and an overview of the legal case presented by our lawyer Steven Shrybman. For those who missed the event or those who would like to review the presentation again, you can read the presentation "The Once and Future Lansdowne Park" here. You can also find out more on the Legal Challenge here. And view a video excerpt of the presentation here or the full video presentation here.

Rounding out the evening was a repeat performance by Chris White of "The Lansdowne Blues" - see the live version captured at City Hall.

Thanks to all for continuing to offer time, effort and money to the cause - stay tuned for the Lansdowne Follies in February 2011!

Lame Duck Council to Meet on Lansdowne

Rubber DuckieOn Friday November 19th, a special city council meeting will be held to hear delegations on the Stage 1 Site Plan for Lansdowne. Then on Wednesday November 24th the current council will meet to decide on the proposed site plan details.

Steven Shrybman, of Sack Goldblatt Mitchell LLP who represents Friends of Lansdowne, argues that section 275 of the Municipal Act precludes the outgoing Council from making decisions on the site plan and the relocation of the Horticulture Building. "We have what is known as a 'lame duck' council" says Shrybman " a council that no longer has a democratic mandate to govern. The Municipal Act clearly states that 'lame duck' councils should not make major or costly decisions. Yet here we have a Council proposing to approve a project of at least $170 Million only 1 week before it leaves office."
