Council of Canadians Ottawa Chapter Defends the Lansdowne Park Commons

At this moment about 150 people are gathered at the Knox Presbyterian Church in downtown Ottawa for an Ottawa chapter-organized public forum in defence of Lansdowne Park, a public space under threat by private development.

The meeting began with a rousing version of 'We Shall Not Be Moved' with a trio playing guitar, banjo and tambourine. The lines included, "No public land for private use, we shall not be moved/ With the Council behind us, we shall not be moved/ Let's stop and think and get it right, we shall not be moved/ Just like a tree standing by the water, we shall not be moved."

Two Points of View

The following comments were to Ian Lee from an unnamed source:

As a tax payer who supports what the city has done with OSEG, I am very disappointed that a PHD who has a background in economics, would not see the economic benefit of the total re-development of the park. At the end of the day, the city may not have been right in how they awarded it to OSEG, but NO ONE was stepping up with a legitimate financial proposal.

Save the Beaver Pond Rally--Saturday, Jan 8‏th

Friends of Lansdowne supporter Gary Sealey provided this account of the rally.

5339357068_4f887c067eFriends of Lansdowne were numerous and vocal in their support of the Beaverpond rally today avoided by City politicians and corporate spokespersons.

In the presence of elder grandfather Algonquin Chief William Commanda about 150 people sang and raised protest signs as they gathered for a march on the Urbandale showroom at an intensively developed Kanata Lakes suburban development on a graded promontory near the Beaverpond South March Highlands area. Many of those signs carried the slogan "Let's Get it Right", the battle cry of the Friends of Lansdowne.

Paul Renaud, one of the speakers, denounced the City of Ottawa for wasting money on Lansdowne Park instead of providing basic research funds and protection measures for prehistoric sites and crucial habitat of endangered species in the South March Highlands Beaverpond natural area.

Lansdowne Legal Challenge: Bullying and Intimidation

I am outraged and appalled by the recent City of Ottawa threat of recovering legal costs from those making the court challenge on Lansdowne Park development. The city's policy is to seek recovery of costs only when the legal challenge is "frivolous and vexatious".

The current legal challenge is anything but. I heard the presentation by the lawyer representing the challengea few weeks ago at the Mayfair theatre. The legal brief is serious, very carefully reasoned, and based, in my view, on a perfectly sensible reading of several key provisions of the Ontario Municipal Act - specifically that the City is obliged to spend taxpayers' money wisely by using competitive tendering, and that the City is obliged to be open and honest in its dealings with the public. For both provisions, the lawyer presented an impressive series of facts which indicate serious violations by the City of Ottawa of the Ontario Municipal Act.
